Supported by CLM’s business partners, delegates got to experience on the road training with instructors from TTC and then test their skills in driving simulators from XPI. Smart Motorways – New Automatic Fixed Penalties

Obey the Red X or Get a £100 Fine If you’re driving somewhere on the currently 400 miles of smart motorways (200 miles in each direction) and you see a red X on the overhead gantry, that’s telling you that the lane you’re on is closed and you must move to an adjacent lane as soon as it’s safe to do so. If you don’t comply, the cameras will record your number plate and you’ll get a £100 fine and notice of 3 penalty points on your licence through the post a few days later. This is a new law which comes into operation from 10th June 2019, although Highways England say that actual fining won’t be happening until [...]

HMRC Advisory Fuel Rates

Advisory Fuel Rates for June 2019 HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has increased its mileage rates for most cars in the new AFR rates which apply from 1 June. Under the new rates, all petrol cars and LPG vehicles benefit from rates rises of 1p per mile. There is no change to the rate for diesel cars with an engine size of 1.6 litres or lower, but the rates for larger engined diesel cars have also risen by 1ppm. The advisory electricity rate (AER) first introduced in September 2018 for plug-in electric cars remains unchanged at 4ppm. The AFR changes are relevant as the company car advisory fuel rates are used by organisations to reimburse drivers for fuel used in [...]

Mobile Phone Safety While Driving

Mobile Phones: Rules When Driving Driving while holding a mobile phone has been against the law since 2003, but many people still appear to be confused by this legislation. It’s a good idea to acquaint yourself with the ins and outs of mobile phone safety while driving, as the penalties for getting it wrong can be high. Only a few days ago, in a very high-profile case, footballer David Beckham was convicted of driving while holding a mobile phone. In his defence, he said that he was in very slow-moving traffic in the middle of London. Unfortunately, no matter how slow-moving the traffic is, it’s still against the law to hold your mobile phone and getting caught can cost [...]

Tyres Trigger Debate at Silverstone

Tyre Matters Debated at CLM's Silverstone Customer Event At CLM’s recent driver safety focused event, delegates got to hear all about recent tyre developments and how tyre tread is currently the subject of much debate in the fleet and wider motoring industry. Michelin shared details about how electronics are being incorporated into tyres to allow tyre performance to be monitored by the vehicle they are fitted to, and from afar as well. And not just about pressure, but tread depth and damage too. It might not be that long before fleet managers don’t need to inspect employee tyres in carparks any longer because sensors and software will ultimately do it for them. The technology is being trialled in certain [...]

Google Maps Boost for EV Drivers

Google Guides EV Drivers Up until now, the go-to source for information on UK EV (electric vehicles) charging facilities around the country has been Zap-Map, a UK-based platform which provides information on the whole topic of electric vehicles and their green potential. This app has static map images showing the location of charging stations, but not their status. However, on Tuesday 23rd April 2019, Google Maps introduced the latest innovation for the drivers of EVs. Simultaneously in the US and the UK, the American multi-national technology company Google LLC launched a new real-time addition to Maps which will assist EV drivers in finding available charging stations and a lot more. All the major charging networks are included, plus businesses [...]

AdBlue Confusion

Drivers Are Still Making AdBlue Mistakes Five Years On AdBlue technology was first introduced in passenger cars in 2014 with the advent of the Euro 6 emissions standard, and it has been widely used in HGVs for around a decade longer. But, despite this history and the fact that the majority of modern diesel cars use AdBlue, there still appears to be a significant amount of ignorance about what it is and how it should be used. The most recent data collected on AdBlue-related breakdowns was published by the AA in June 2018. This showed that they had dealt with over 23k AdBlue related breakdowns in the previous year, almost double the number of the year before that. As [...]

The Intelligent Speed Assistance system enables cars to receive information via GPS and a digital map so that the vehicle knows what the speed limit is and can limit its top speed accordingly. In addition to the data feed, an onboard video camera, capable of recognising road [...]
